The collection is composed of excerpts from the diary of Mattie Susan Phlegar, 1872-1968. The youngest of 18 children of Benjamin Phlegar and Ellen Surface, Mattie seemed to have lived a pleasant lifestyle. Her father was a farmer, owning 600 acres of land. Her diary depicts life and social customs of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Mattie Phlegar resided in Floyd County, Virginia, and graduated from Marion College, Marion, Virginia; also, she taught at Marion College shortly after graduating. Mattie Phlegar enjoyed playing the organ and singing in the church. She married Steve Phlegar in 1896. Due to a rise of malaria in the early 1900's in their part of country, the Phlegars opened a retreat for sick children which they named "Greystone." They later opened a furniture store and donated all the profits to keep Greystone operational. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Later she met Hoge Tyler, a former Governor of Virginia.

Mattie Susan Phlegar 1872-1968 was a graduate of Marion College and later taught there. She resided in Floyd County, Virginia. From various references about her father it seems he probably was a farmer. The diary was written several years before her death in 1968. She also was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She and her husband also opened a retreat for the sick children in the early 1900's.
